Survey of Aphid Species Affecting Some Ornamental Nurseries in Karbala Governorate, Iraq

Abstract

A survey was conducted during the period 2023-2024 to identify some of the most common aphid species belonging to the family Aphididae on ornamental plants in Karbala Governorate. Few nurseries distributed in over six districts were selected. Collected aphid species were identified using a previously described taxonomic key. The results obtained revealed the presence of Dandelion aphid, Aphis taraxacicola infesting gazania, zinnia, and tecoma plants, green citrus aphid, Aphis spiraecola infesting Spiraea canescens (Bursera), chrysanthemum aphid, Macrosiphonilla sanborni infesting Datura and Jasminum sambac plants, and cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae infesting ornamental cabbage.
